Fuel prices to be lowered soon

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi confirms that the Government will lower fuel prices but remained tight-lipped as to when this will take place.

Asking the public to “wait and be patient”, the Premier said he would make an announcement or issue a statement on the matter soon.

“We have discussed the matter in a recent Cabinet meeting but a few details still need to be looked into before I announce it.

“I hope the trend of lower fuel prices in the global market will continue so that our price at the petrol pumps will be reduced naturally. I can’t tell when the announcement is,” he told reporters Friday after meeting with Brunei Crown Prince Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah at his office here.

On Wednesday, the Cabinet had mulled over the possibility of Malaysians paying less for fuel soon due to the global prices of fuel taking a stumble from a height of above US$140 per barrel.

Asked if such a decision now would be perceived as a political gimmick in view of the impending by-election in Permatang Pauh, Abdullah said this was discussed even before PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had announced her decision to step down as MP.
